Nr. 82 – Oum Kalthoum

Come again? Oum what? She is THE most famous female artist of the Arabic world. After her death in 1975 people still refer to her as the greatest female singer in Arab music history.
Kalthoum was (most likely) born 1898 in Egypt and was popular both as a singer and an actress. Many artists of the west have also claimed her to be a great influence, among those Bob Dylan, Bono, Led Zeppelin and Maria Callas. Why is she cool? 25 years after her death she is still talked about as one of the greatest singer of an entire culture and her untouchable title as The Star of the East must be considered to be cool!
(I’m sorry for choosing a clip with a narrator but I thought it would give a bit of an insight to the musical tradition she’s a part of.)
